(Pinckneyville, Ill.) - A superb first half at both ends of the court helped the Junior Panthers knock off Du Quoin Middle School on Thursday night in Pinckneyville, 51-41, with Duke Riggins scoring a game-high 28 points for PJHS.
Pinckneyville led by as many as 23 points in the third quarter before Du Quoin closed the gap late, but the early hole the Warriors dug themselves in was far too big. The Junior Panthers outscored DMS 30-11 in the first half.
"We just got out-played and out-hustled in the first half," said Du Quoin head coach Jason James. "They got every loose ball and did a great job defensively. We have to do a better job of coming out ready to go. We had a hard time running any offense. We played a lot of one on one ball in the first half, the second half we ran our offense and put up 30. We'll keep trying to improve."
Gabe Paredes was also in double figures for PJHS with 13 points, Bill Rainey finished with 7, Colten Loos had 3.
The Warriors were led by Xavier Baxter's 17 points, Jaden Smith added 8, Slayde Huntley had 6, Trajion Smith 4, Caden Hutchens 3, Maurice Washington 2 and David Lee 1.
Pinckneyville is at home again on Monday against Chester. Du Quoin also plays on Monday, hitting the road to take on Sparta.
