(Pinckneyville, Ill.) - The Junior Panthers honored their eighth grade boys basketball players and cheerleaders at Wednesday's 8th Grade Night home game against Christopher, but couldn't celebrate the evening with a victory, falling 39-32 to the Bearcats.
After a 9-9 first quarter, Pinckneyville fell behind in the second as they managed only four points in the period. Christopher continued to tack onto their lead, outscoring the Panthers 10-8 in the third quarter, and 12-11 in the fourth, where they made eight crucial free throws to stay ahead down the stretch.
Duke Riggins led PJHS in scoring with 16 points, Gabe Paredes had 6, Colten Loos 5, Bill Rainey 3 and Holden Clark 2.
In other recent action, the Junior Panthers won a hard-fought overtime battle at home with Trico on January 10, 51-49. PJHS made 5-of-6 free throws in the extra frame, including a 4-for-4 performance by Loos.
Riggins led the scoring with 32 points against the Pioneers, Loos had 12, Paredes 4 and Clark 3. Pinckneyville was 15-for-21 at the free throw line in the ball game.
On January 8, PJHS defeated Chester at home, 44-27, again with Riggins and Loos both in double figures with 22 and 10 points respectively. Paredes added 6 points and H. Clark, Jayden Clark, and Jeremiah Kelly each had 2.
The Junior Panthers (16-6) have one regular season game remaining on Thursday night at Sparta. They'll begin their Class M Regional tournament on January 24 at Zeigler-Royalton against the host.
