(Pinckneyville, Ill.) - One postseason trophy down, hopefully three more to go. The Lady Panthers continued their journey for a return trip to the State Finals by claiming Saturday's Regional championship over Johnston City, 6-0 in Pinckneyville.
The offense came from the long ball, as catcher Josie Gleason hit a pair of homers and pitcher Mariah Clark put the game out of reach with a three-run bomb in the fourth inning. Clark allowed just two hits in the circle to pick up the victory. Gleason's first round-tripper was a two-run shot in the bottom of the first, the second a solo home run in the bottom of the third.
"Mariah was really good today," said PCHS head coach Alan Engelhardt. "Both her velocity and movement were exceptional as she struck out fifteen."
"Josie had a big day for us, hitting the two home runs. It was big for her to hit the first to get us off to a start where we could just relax and play. Mariah put a great swing on hers as well and created some real separation, getting us to a six-run lead."
Gleason (2-3, 3 RBI, 2 HR), Clark (1-3, 3 RBI, HR) and Taylor Witges (2-4) had the only hits for Pinckneyville.
"Even though we only came out with five hits, I thought we had some good at-bats," Engelhardt said. "We need to continue to play relaxed because we are playing some good softball right now."
The Lady Panthers (30-4) move on to face Fairfield at the Johnston City Sectional on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The winner advances to Saturday's Sectional championship at 11:00 a.m.
