(West Frankfort, Ill.) - A dreadful first quarter doomed Pinckneyville in their second game at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic Girls Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night, as Herrin held on for a 39-35 victory after taking a 13-5 lead in the opening period.
"We got off to a terrible start and never recovered," said PCHS head coach Alan Engelhardt. "The really disappointing thing is that they were playing a sagging zone and we had 22 turnovers. For the second straight game, Bella Pasquino stepped up for us with 15 points. Aside from her, we didn't get much going offensively."
Pasqunio and Kenzie Rushing (10 points) were the only Panthers to score more than 5 points, as PCHS shot a mere 27% from the field (13-for-48). Pasquino also led Pinckneyville in rebounds with 8, Megan Breslin added 5 steals on defense. M. Breslin (5 points), Taylor Witges (2), Kiya Hagene (2) and Aubrey Bruns (1) also scored for the Lady Panthers.
PCHS gets a chance to leave the tournament with a winning record when they take on Sesser-Valier on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
