(West Frankfort, Ill.) - Pinckneyville overcame a slow first quarter and rolled to a 54-37 win over the tournament host Lady Redbirds on day one of the West Frankfort Girls Mid-Winter Classic on Saturday, with Megan Breslin and Bella Pasquino each putting in 15 points to lead the way.
Two other Lady Panthers also finished in double figures - Kiya Hagene and Kenzie Rushing, both of whom scored 10 points in the win over West Frankfort.
"I think we did a pretty nice job all the way around tonight," said PCHS head coach Alan Engelhardt. "Defensively, we made them earn most of their points and used our defense to generate some offense. Offensively, even though we didn't shoot the ball all that well, we still found ways to score at the rim and we knocked down free throws."
"I really liked how Bella attacked the rim tonight and Megan had a good game knocking down some shots from midrange as well as doing a good job of doubling the ball. Kiya Hagene played really well off the bench for us, and Kenzie Rushing had a good night defensively and rebounding to go with her 10 points. I was very pleased with the kids' effort tonight."
Haleigh Kling and Aubrey Bruns both had two points to round out the scoring for Pinckneyville.
The Lady Panthers take the floor at West Frankfort again on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. against Herrin. They'll then return on Thursday to finish the tournament against Sesser-Valier at 5:30 p.m.
