(Herrin, Ill.) - The Lady Falcons dug themselves an early hole against Valmeyer at Saturday's SIJHSAA Volleyball Class S State Finals and were eliminated in the opening round, 25-19, 25-19.
Elverado fell behind 9-0 in the first set before they were able to put a point on the board, and trailed at one point 14-1 before stringing together seven straight points to force a Valmeyer timeout. The Pirates were able to stay in front, however, and advanced on to the quarterfinals on their way to a fourth place finish.

"Very proud of the season we had," said Elverado coach Donette Wheatley. "The girls played extremely hard, but Valmeyer was the better team today. We adjusted to the push along the net, then they'd hit the hole in the middle back. We have way too many free balls and missed serves today. They gave it everything they had and that's all a coach can ask."
Gracie Dowdy led the Lady Falcons in kills with 5 and digs with 9, Morgan Bernardini added 3 digs, Emma Yates had 2. Sydney Schenk, Reese Funk, Karlie Haynes and Faith Godoyo also saw action for EJHS. Also on the roster for Elverado (21-4, 6-1) are Micah Davis, Chloe Dent, Whitney Ellis, Emily Wisely, Ivannah Jackson, Ellie Pierce and Macy Whitaker.
