(Vienna, Ill.) - The Lady Falcons extended their winning streak to seven matches and swept their way to a 4-0 championship at the Vienna floater tournament on Saturday, September 15, taking out Goreville, Crab Orchard, Vienna and Zeigler-Royalton all in straight sets.
“We had a great tournament,” said Elverado head coach Donette Wheatley. “We only played two sets each match. We are on a seven match winning streak. I hope this carries over to next week.”
The morning began with a 25-19, 25-15 win over Goreville where Emma Funk had 10 kills and Allie Whittington added 6. Funk, Jessica Elson and Morgan Bernardini each had 4 digs, and Bernardini added 8 assists.
“We started the morning down 8-1, but our offense caught fire and never looked back,” said Wheatley. “This was a big win for us!”
Up next was a 25-17, 25-14 victory over Crab Orchard for EHS with Whittington’s 4 kills leading the offense. Whittington, Elson and Morgan Fashion all had 5 digs, and Bernardini again led assists with 6.
“Started slow again,” Wheatley said, “but once we got ahead, we stayed ahead. Our offense has been rolling. I don’t remember the last time we beat Crab.”
Tournament host Vienna was the Falcons’ next opponent, and after a tough first set, Elverado finished strong in the second to win the match 27-25, 25-10. Whittington and Funk both had 5 kills, Bernardini and Emma Yates both had 4 digs, and Bernardini finished with a team-high 6 assists. Yates chipped in 5 assists and had 4 service aces.
“We were behind the whole first set, but we kept our composure and stopped making errors to pull the win out,” Wheatley said. “Our confidence is growing with every match, our offense has been great, and our serves have definitely kept us in our matches.”
EHS finished off the tournament with a 25-20, 25-20 win over Z-R with Whittington (5 kills, 3 digs) and Funk (4 kills, 3 digs) leading the way once more. Bernardini again topped digs for Elverado with 6, and Yates led assists with 7.
“We played a little sluggish, but we pulled it out,” Wheatley said. “Our offense was lacking this match, missed a couple serves and made a few errors.”
Funk and Whittington were named to the all-tournament team for Elverado (11-7, 3-0 conference).
