(Carterville, Ill.) - Elverado nearly pulled off a big upset at Carterville on September 10, but couldn’t quite finish it off as the Lady Lions bounced back after dropping the first set to beat EHS 21-25, 25-21, 25-16.
“These girls continue to amaze me,” said Lady Falcons head coach Donette Wheatley. “We really played some great volleyball tonight. We played smart, placing the ball where their defense could not get it. Our hitters matched up with their hitters and Kaity Lewis and Emma Funk blocked their best hitters. These bigger schools don’t give us enough credit. We’ve played with the best of them.”
Lewis (9) and Funk (7) combined for 16 of Elverado’s 21 kills on the night. Emma Yates led digs with 5 and assists with 7, and Lewis topped blocks with 4.
The junior varsity match went to the Lady Falcons in three sets, 12-25, 25-14, 16-14. EHS rallied back from down 13-9 in the third set to pull out their fifth win of the year. Reese Funk led the way in kills with 6, Morgan Bernardini led digs with 7 and assists with 7.
The freshman match ended in a tie, a set apiece, with EHS taking the first 25-16 and Carterville the second 25-18. Macy Whitaker had a team-best 4 kills and 5 digs. Ellie Pierce had 5 assists.
