(Sparta, Ill.) - Volleyball season got underway for the Lady Falcons on August 26 at Sparta, as the 2A Lady Bulldogs held on for a 25-8, 26-24 home win over 1A Elverado.
“We started very timid,” said EHS coach Donette Wheatley. “They had some great hitters. The second set we loosened up and played right with them. We were up 19-13 at one time, taking advantage of their mistakes and playing offense of our own. They slowly climbed back, taking advantage of our mistakes and sealing the win. Our girls were all over the place diving and digging their hard hits. We definitely learned we can play with the best of them.”
Emma Funk, Kaity Lewis and Abby Jeschke each had 2 kills for Elverado. Emma Yates led the team in digs with 7, Morgan Bernardini added 5. Yates also led assists with 3, and Lewis led blocks with 3.
The Falcons took home a win in the junior varsity match, 25-14, 25-23, getting 5 kills from Raelyn Schoolcraft and 4 more from Reese Funk. Funk also topped the digs category with 5, and Yates led in assists with 5.
“This was a big confidence booster for our JV kids,” Wheatley said. “They really did a great job against a much bigger school and for it being our first ball game.”
EHS dropped the freshmen match 25-19, 25-17. Macy Whitaker and Emily Wisely each had 1 kill, Sydney Schenk led digs with 4.
