(Cobden, Ill.) - The Lady Falcons opened their 2018 fall volleyball season on Tuesday at Cobden, falling in three sets to the Appleknockers, 22-25, 25-13, 25-22. The Elverado J-V and freshmen teams scored straight-set wins.
"All three teams played pretty well tonight," said EHS head coach Donette Wheatley. "The varsity made way too many mistakes, especially during that second set. Too many mis-hits. Got to work on putting the set in the right place for our hitters. They have got to learn their hitters. Each player likes the ball in a different place, and we will work on that."
"Our first two weeks are going to be tough - Murphy next, then Sparta and S-V-W. All bigger schools that are going to make us a better ball club! We've got to keep our heads up and fight through these two weeks."
Kaity Lewis led the varsity squad in kills with 8, Teigan Rury led digs with 10. Allie Whittington had 3 kills, 3 blocks and 9 digs. Jessica Elson and Lewis each added 6 digs. Rury and Emma Yates topped assists with 6 apiece.
"I have to find the right combination of girls to get the job done," Wheatley said, "Emma Funk can play any position on floor, and I have to find which one is the best for our team. I have two great freshman setters who can step up at any time, as did Emma Yates, and play in a varsity match. Teigan Rury is just a sophomore setter who will also see a lot of varsity time. If we cut down on the mistake each match, we should win a lot of matches."
Elverado's junior varsity squad won 25-15, 25-13 behind four kills, three blocks, and six digs from Abby Jeschke. The freshmen won 25-22, 25-19, getting five kills from Gracie Dowdy and ten digs from Morgan Bernardini.
Elverado is at Murphysboro on Thursday, and faces Sparta on Aug. 27 in the home opener at Vergennes.
