(Vergennes, Ill.) - For the first time in school history, the Elverado Lady Falcons softball team has won back-to-back Regional championships, demolishing NCOE 13-0 in five innings on Saturday, May 18 behind a one-hitter from Allie Whittington in the pitching circle and three-RBI games by Chloe Barnes and Emma Yates on offense.

“This group of athletes have had some major accomplishments all year long,” said EHS head coach Donette Wheatley. “We played well Saturday. We are really hitting the ball; 6 doubles and a triple out of 14 hits. We need to just keep on doing what we are doing and take it one game at a time.”

Whittington improved to 21-1 in the circle with the win, allowing one hit and one walk to go along with ten strikeouts. Barnes (3-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2B), Yates (2-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2B, 3B), Whittington (1-3, R, 2B, HBP), Emma Funk (2-3, 2 R, RBI, 2B, BB), Morgan Bernardini (1-3, R, 2B, HBP), Kaity Lewis (2-3, R, RBI, 2B), Reese Funk (1-3, R, RBI) and Sydney Schenk (2-3, 2 R, RBI) accounted for the Falcons’ 14 hits.

Elverado earned their spot in the championship earlier in the week by hammering Carrier Mills 20-1 in just four innings. Yates again led the team in RBI’s with 5, sharing that distinction with Zoe Maple.

“We came to play today,” Wheatley said. “We have set a goal for the post season and we are taking it one game at a time. We have been very disciplined at the plate as of late and we have got to be that way all the way through. I believe we have one of the best pitchers in Southern Illinois and a great team behind her. We just have to stay focused. It's a great day to be a Falcon!”

Hits for EHS against Carrier Mills came from Funk (1-3, 3 R, BB), Barnes (2-2, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 2B, SAC, HBP), Yates (3-4, 3 R, 5 RBI, 2B), Lewis (1-2, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB), Schenk (1-1, 2 R, 2 BB) and Maple (3-3, R, 5 RBI). Whittington got the win, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.

The Lady Falcons also recently learned that four players were named to the SEC All-Conference Team - Whittington (1st), Yates (1st), Barnes (1st) and Funk (2nd).
