(Vergennes, Ill.) - For the first time since 2013, the Lady Falcons are Regional Champions in softball after defeating Steeleville 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. It was the second straight year that Elverado bounced the Lady Warriors from the postseason, but unlike 2017, EHS finished off the Regional title this time around.
The biggest hit of the day for Elverado came in the top of the third inning when Kaity Lewis doubled to score both of the Lady Falcons' runs. Morgan Cashion had walked with one out, and Emma Funk reached base moments later on a fielder's choice.
"(Lewis is) the one that got us going last year when we beat them," said EHS head coach Donette Wheatley. "We were hoping we would score first again and get them down, and fortunately we took advantage of an error to score. They made a couple of mistakes base-running, we capitalized on that and held them to just one run."
That would prove to be enough for Allie Whittington in the pitching circle. Whittington would get some help from the defense, stranding runners on in each of the first three innings before Steeleville broke through with a run on a walk, a hit, and an error in the fourth. Whittington closed the door after that, however, allowing no earned runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts for the day.
"Allie's done a great job for us all year long," Wheatley said. "(Assistant Coach Greg Whittington) and Allie have a father-daughter bond that gives them an edge against the opponent. He called a great game today keeping Steeleville batters in check. Allie threw the ball where it needed to be. Like I said last time, we have to keep on doing what we are doing."
Funk (1-4, R), Lewis (1-2, 2 RBI, 2B), Cheradon Lively (1-3) and Tori Ehlers (1-3) had hits for Elverado.
The Lady Falcons (22-5) advance to the Goreville Sectional and will meet Elizabethtown (Hardin County) in the 6:30 p.m. semifinal on Tuesday, May 22.
