(Vergennes, Ill.) - Elverado softball put the exclamation point on their finest regular season in program history on May 11, slapping ten runs on Dongola in a six-inning one-hit shutout by pitcher Allie Whittington.

“We we're glad to get this one in, we played in a misty rain the whole game,” said EHS coach Donette Wheatley. “This win gave us our fifth consecutive conference championship. Allie has not given up a run in the conference the last 2 years. I'm very proud of this team and how they work together and our two seniors will definitely be missed.”

“Allie has been the best pitcher in the conference all four of her high school years and Morgan Cashion has played a very solid second base for us. It's going to be different without Allie on the mound but, we still have three very good pitchers on the team. It's been the best year Elverado softball has ever had with over twenty wins and only three losses. It's great to be a Falcon.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Whittington was one out from a potential perfect game wen she surrendered a base hit with two down in the sixth inning. She struck out fifteen and walked none.

Offensively, EHS took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with RBI singles from Kaity Lewis and Morgan Cashion. They opened up the flood gates in the fifth, getting five more RBIs from Emma Yates (two-run double), Sydney Schenk (single) and Zoe Maple (two-run double). In the sixth, the Falcons finished off the win with a bases-loaded walk to Chloe Barnes and a walk-off single by Yates.

  Whittington (1-2, 2 R, BB, HBP), Barnes (1-3, RBI, BB), Yates (2-4, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2B), Lewis (1-2, 2 R, RBI, HBP), Schenk (1-3, R, RBI), Maple (1-3, 2 RBI, 2B), Cashion (1-3, RBI), Emma Funk (2-3, R, BB) and Morgan Bernardini (2-4, 2 R) had Elverado’s hits in their regular season finale.
