(Vergennes, Ill.) - It had been a while since the Lady Falcons had a nail-biter, but Johnston City gave them one on April 17 as Elverado fought back from down 3-0 to knock off the Lady Indians 5-4.

“I’m so proud of the way the girls didn’t get down after Johnston City took a 3-0 lead,” said EHS head coach Donette Wheatley. “The coach wasn’t taking it too well, but the kids did an awesome job. (Morgan Bernardini) has always been the positive one on the court, on the field, or in the dugout. She can always be heard telling her teammates ‘it’s ok, you’re fine, get the next one.’ She also had a great day at the plate today. Chloe (Barnes) also came through with a big hit of her own scoring two runs.”

None of Johnston City’s first three runs were earned, as errors contributed to rallies in both the first and fourth innings.

The Falcons started their comeback in the fourth, as Barnes was hit by a pitch and Emma Yates walked in front of three consecutive singles by Kaity Lewis, Zoe Maple and Reese Funk, cutting the deficit to a single run.

An inning later, Barnes delivered a two-run double to give EHS the lead, and Maple gave them an insurance run that would later come in handy with her two-out base hit.

“We had some defensive miscues early, but pulled it together and made the pays when we needed to,” added Wheatley. “We also had a few brain farts on the base paths, including mine, trying to make something happen when we were down. But, the girls had my back the next inning and produced the go-ahead runs which shows these kids’ character and the will to win. Kudos to Allie (Whittington) on another stellar performance on the mound. I’m really proud of this team. When you hear them dancing and singing in the dugout, you know something is happening right for the Falcons.”

Whittington gave up three singles in the seventh as the lead was cut to one, but she got a pop-out to second baseman Morgan Cashion with two outs to end it.

Bernardini (3-4, R), Barnes (1-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B, HBP), Lewis (1-2, RBI, HBP), Maple (2-3, RBI) and R. Funk (2-3) had the hits for the Lady Falcons. Whittington notched the victory in the circle with one earned run allowed on seven hits and no walks with nine strikeouts.
