(Goreville, Ill.) - The Lady Falcons stormed back from down 6-0 at Goreville to win 8-7 over the Lady Blackcats on April 1 - no fooling. Allie Whittington drove in five runs, including a grand slam, and Morgan Bernardini picked up the win in the pitching circle for Elverado.

“When they took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second, I thought to myself, this is going to be a short game,” said EHS head coach Donette Wheatley. “But then we loaded the bases with two hits and an error, and Allie hit a laser to clear the bases. We put together some more hits in the fifth to take the lead but they tied it in the bottom of the inning. Syd (Schenk) had some great catches in left and Mo B did a great job on the mound and shut them down the last two innings.”

Goreville got 3 runs on four this in each of the first two frames to jump on top by half a dozen, and Whittington’s grand slam cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the third.

In the top of the fifth, Emma Yates (single), Chloe Barnes (single) and Schenk had RBI’s in a three-run inning for EHS, as the Lady Falcons took their first lead.

A walk and a triple for the Blackcats tied it up in the bottom of the inning, but in the top of the sixth, Elverado would go back in front for good after a single by Emma Funk, an error, and an RBI ground ball by Whittington.

Bernardini settled in on the rubber and didn’t allow a runner past first base the last two innings, finishing with six earned runs allowed on eleven hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

“We made the plays and hit the ball at the right time tonight,” said Wheatley. “This was a big win for us. The girls never got down, even when we were down 6-0. The did a great job.”

Funk (1-4, 2 R), Bernardini (1-3, 2 R, BB), Whittington (2-3, 2 R, 5 RBI, GS, BB), Yates (1-4, R, RBI), Barnes (2-4, RBI) and Zoe Maple (1-2, R) each hit safely for the Falcons in the win at Goreville.
