(Vergennes, Cairo & Marion, Ill.) - Elverado softball has been red hot this season and continued that trend recently with a stretch of five wins in as many days from April 9 through April 13.
First, on April 5, Z-R-C hosted the Lady Falcons who built an early lead and held on for a 10-7 victory. Allie Whittington allowed only three earned runs in the game, as the defense behind her committed five errors.
"We are hitting the ball well, up and down the lineup," said EHS head coach Donette Wheatley. "Our defense, on the other hand, needs a little work. You can tell we are a team who has seen very little of the practice field, and a lot of batting practice in the gym."
  Hitting for Elverado against Z-R-C were Whittington (2-4, 2 R, RBI, 3B, BB), Kaity Lewis (3-4, 3 R, RBI, 2B, BB), Cheradon Lively (3-4, 4 RBI), Elizabeth Schafer (2-4, R, 2B), Morgan Cashion (1-3, BB) and Tori Ehlers (2-3, 2 R, 2B, BB).
On April 9, EHS hosted Chester and picked up a 4-1 victory behind big RBI hits by Lively (3-4, 2 R, RBI, HR) and freshmen Chloe Barnes (2-3, R, RBI) and Leia Bryant (1-3, RBI). Whittington again worked the circle, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out eleven. This victory began the stretch of five wins in five days for Elverado. Lewis (1-4), Schafer (1-2, R, BB), Ehlers (1-2, BB) and Emma Funk (2-3, BB) also hit safely for EHS.
  On April 10, Whittington tossed a five-inning perfect game against Egyptian, fanning eleven in the 14-0 short-game. Funk (2-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 3B), Whittington (2-4, 2 R, 2B), Schafer (1-2, R, RBI, BB), Barnes (2-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B), Ehlers (1-2, R, RBI), Bryant (1-2, R), Cashion (1-1) and Zoe Maple (1-3, R, 2 RBI, 2B) all had hits against Egyptian.

That win was followed up a day later with a 15-0 annihilation of Cairo on the road, and the day after that with an 8-4 win at Crab Orchard. Against Crab, Bryant had 3 RBIs out of the number 9-spot in the lineup and finished 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored.
Funk (1-5, R, 2 RBI, HR) and Lewis (3-5, R, 2 RBI, HR) both hit home runs in the victory. Whittington (1-4, RBI, BB), Lively (2-4, R), Maple (2-4) and Ehlers (1-3, R, BB) also had hits for the Lady Falcons. Whittington got the victory, allowing three earned runs on six hits while walking three and striking out ten.
Complete their run of five days, five wins, Elverado dismantled Agape on April 13 by the score of 12-0 in five innings, getting RBIs from seven different players in the lineup.
  Funk (2-3, 2 R, 2B), Lewis (2-3, R, RBI, 2B), Whittington (3-3, 2 R, RBI, 3B), Lively (2-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, HR), Schafer (3-3, R, RBI, 2B), Maple (2-3, R, 2 RBI, 3B), Ehlers (2-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3B), Cashion (1-3, RBI) and Kennedy Kimmel (1-1) had hits for EHS at home against Agape.
As of April 13, Elverado's record for the season was 10-2 overall. Their recent surge catapulted them into the Class 1A state rankings put out by the Illinois Coaches Association at #14 in the most recent poll.
