(Vergennes, Ill.) - Despite getting out-hit by West Frankfort, the Lady Falcons still managed to keep their winning streak alive with a 6-2 victory at home over the Lady Redbirds on March 27. Allie Whittington notched her seventh win of the season in the pitching circle, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and a pair of walks with nine strikeouts.

“We got out-hit 9-5, but we pushed our runs across by putting the ball in play and taking advantage of their mistakes,” said Elverado head coach Donette Wheatley. “Our defense stepped up and made the plays necessary to keep the them from scoring. We've got to continue doing what we are doing and stay focused taking one game at a time.”

Frankfort took the early lead in the top of the first after a pair of hits, but the the Falcons fought right back in the bottom of the inning with two and never trailed after that. Emma Funk drew a walk and Morgan Bernardini singled during the brief rally.

An error allowed EHS to plate another run in the bottom of the second, and in the fifth inning another error and an RBI single by Chloe Barnes put the Lady Falcons up 5-1. Whittington added an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the sixth for Elverado’s sixth tally.

Funk (1-2, 2 R, 2 BB), Bernardini (1-3, R, BB), Barnes (1-3, R, RBI), Sydney Schenk (1-3) and Zoe Maple (1-3) had the Lady Falcons’ five hits against West Frankfort.

The Lady Redbirds became the third Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference team that Elverado has beaten so far this season.
