(Vergennes, Ill.) - The Lady Falcons won their fourth game in a row on Thursday, March 21, shutting out New Athens 3-0 in a duel between a pair of All-State pitchers.

“We didn’t generate a whole lot of offense, but when you win against an All-State first team pitcher, it’s a good win,” said EHS head coach Donette Wheatley. “We took advantage of their errors and pushed three runs across which was enough to win. When your pitcher is getting over half the outs on her own, and your defense plays solid in the field, those few runs will win you a ball game.”

Elverado’s Allie Whittington got the better of New Athens’ Julia Drake, allowing just three hits while striking out a dozen for her fourth win of the year.

The Lady Falcons’ offense gave Whittington all the help she would need in the bottom of the third inning, doing all of their damage with two outs. Emma Funk reached on an error to extend the inning, then Morgan Bernardini (1-3, R) and Whittington (1-3, R, RBI) both singled before Emma Yates reached on a dropped third strike.

“The adjustments to our lineup are paying off,” Wheatley added. “I’m proud of the way the girls stick together, and the enthusiasm in the dugout. It was a big win.”

Zoe Maple (1-2) had the only other hit for the Falcons, who are 4-1 overall and unbeaten since an opening day loss to Red Bud.
