(Vergennes, Ill.) - Elverado squeaked out a 5-4 home win over another 2A River-to-River Conference team on Wednesday, March 20, emerging victorious in a back-and-forth battle with Sparta.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, EHS plated three runs to take the lead, and Allie Whittington shut the door in the pitching circle in the top of the seventh to secure the W.

“We played a great game tonight,” said Lady Falcons head coach Donette Wheatley. “They took an early lead but we didn’t let it shake us. We played hard considering the cold, wet conditions.”

Back-to-back doubles put the Lady Bulldogs up 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but Elverado got two in the third on RBI singles from Kaity Lewis and Chloe Barnes to go up 2-1. Sparta fired back in the sixth with a three-run homer to regain the lead, but not for long.

Barnes cut the lead to one with a solo shot to start the bottom of the sixth, then Sydney Schenk and Emma Funk both reached on errors, resulting in another run to tie the score at 4-4. With two outs, Morgan Bernardini delivered the go-ahead run on a base hit, putting the Lady Falcons on top.

“They went ahead by two after a home run, but then Barnes got ahold of one for us, and then we rallied for two more runs,” Wheatley said. “Berny came through with a big hit to score what turned out to be the winning run. We played a solid game considering the elements. I was very proud of our effort.”

Whittington allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out 13 to pick up her third pitching victory of the season. Funk (2-4, 2 R, 2B), Bernardini (1-3, RBI, BB), Whittington (1-3, R, BB), Lewis (1-3, RBI) and Barnes (3-3, R, 2 RBI, HR) had Elverado’s eight hits.
