(Red Bud, Ill.) - Four errors in the final four innings - all of which led to runs for the Musketeers - cost the Lady Falcons dearly in their softball season opener on Friday at Red Bed, as Elverado fell 8-7 on a walk-off passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“Not the way we wanted to start the season,” said EHS head coach Donette Wheatley. “We came out hitting the ball the first two innings, then after that we couldn't adjust. We only had four hits the last five innings. We knew with it being our first game and not even having a single practice outside we might have a couple of errors, but four is too many when you take a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. We know what we have to work on now and use this game to learn from and not get us down.”

Kaity Lewis and Emma Yates both had RBI singles in a three-run first for the Falcons, and Lewis added two more RBIs on her two-run double in the second that made it 5-0.

It was still 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning when the mistakes started to mount for Elverado. An error was followed up by a triple with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, then another error following a pair of singles led to a three-run fifth for Red Bud.

Three more runs in the sixth - thanks in part to two more errors to back-to-back batters - knotted things up at 7-7 to set up the Musketeers’ game-winning situation an inning later.

Elverado pitcher Allie Whittington allowed two earned runs on nine hits and a hit batter. Lewis (2-4, R, 3 RBI, 2B), Yates (3-4, R, 2 RBI), Whittington (1-3, RBI, HBP), Emma Funk (2-4, 3 R), Morgan Bernardini (1-3, RBI, HBP) and Morgan Cashion (1-4) had hits for the Lady Falcons (0-1).

“Emma Yates had a good day at the plate, Allie threw pretty well striking out ten,” Wheatley added, “we just need to get some practice in on the field.”
