(Vergennes, Ill.) - Elverado trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning of last Thursday's home game against Christ Our Rock Lutheran, but put together a four-run rally in the fifth before winning the game in walk-off fashion in the seventh, 5-4.
"The girls stepped it up again, we got behind early but we never quit," said EHS head coach Donette Wheatley. "The first time through the line-up their pitcher had us off-balance cause her ball was moving so much. We broke up her perfect game in the fourth with Kaity Lewis's single, then in the fifth we started to connect."
"We had two errors in the sixth that let the tying run score, but we knocked the starting pitcher out to score the winning run in the seventh. Allie did a great job on the mound keeping the free passes to just one. Its a great way to start the season and we are just going to take it one game at a time."
Elizabeth Schafer walked to start EHS's four-run fifth, then Morgan Cashion singled, Tori Ehlers reached on an error, and Zoe Maple drove in two with a base hit. Emma Funk would later double in another run to give the Lady Falcons a 4-3 lead.
CORL tied it up on an unearned run in the sixth, but with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Funk singled then scored after a base hit by Lewis to give the game to Elverado.
In the pitching circle, Allie Whittington allowed three earned runs on seven hits and a walk with 13 strikeouts. Hitting for the Lady Falcons were Funk (2-4, R, RBI, 2B), Lewis (2-4, RBI), Schafer (1-2, R, BB), Cashion (1-3, R) and Maple (1-3, R, 2 RBI).
A day later against Red Bud, Whittington was electric in the circle allowing just one hit with 10 Ks in the 10-0, five-inning short-game win for the Lady Falcons.
"We hit the ball extremely well today," said Wheatley. "Allie kept them in check at the plate only allowing one hit. We had a few mental mistakes, but that will get better with more games under our belts."
Funk (2-2, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB), Lewis (2-3, R, 2 RBI) and Schafer (2-3, R, 3 RBI, 2 2B) each had at least 2 RBIs for the Lady Falcons in the rout.
"Elizabeth (Schafer) had a big stick for us today," Wheatley said. "She hit a couple of ropes."
Whittington (1-1, 2 R, 2 BB), Cashion (1-3, RBI), Maple (1-2, R) Ehlers (2-2, 2 R, 2B) and Mallory Brooks (1-2, RBI) also hit safely for EHS against Red Bud.
The Lady Falcons (3-0) are at Egyptian on Monday and at Sparta on Wednesday.
