(Elkville & Campbell Hill, Ill.) - Elverado had won 4 out of their last 5 game heading into Thursday’s home game with Marissa-Coulterville, but went ice cold in a 17-5 third quarter, allowing the Meteors to escape Elkville with a 44-37 victory.

Marissa led 23-21 at the break before creating some separation in the third period. The Lady Falcons tried to fight back in the final eight minutes, making 6-of-9 at the line and closing the gap with an 11-4 quarter, but couldn’t get in front and fell to 4-6 overall this season.

Allie Whittington led EHS with 15 points, Chloe Barnes had 11, Emma Funk 9 and Brianna Tuthill 2.

The loss to Marissa ended a streak of four consecutive games with at least 29 points for Whittington. The senior was coming in off of back-to-back 43-point performances in each of her previous two efforts, a 68-64 home loss to Egyptian on December 13 and a 67-60 win at Trico on December 19.

20 of Whittington’s 43 against Egyptian came during the fourth quarter, when EHS nearly erased a 13-point deficit as the Pharaohs’ players began to foul out of the game. For most fo the final two minutes, Elverado had a 5-on-4 and even a brief 5-on-3 advantage, leading to a 28-point offensive period for the Falcons that came up just short of a victory.

Funk added 8 points, Tuthill and Abby Jeschke each had 6, and Emma Yates had 1.

At Trico this past Wednesday, Whittington matched her incredible effort from the Egyptian game, torching Trico for 43 points and going a perfect 15-for-15 at the free throw line including 8-for-8 in the fourth quarter as the Falcons roared back from down 4 to start the final frame.

Jeschke added 9 points against the Pioneers, Tuthill had 8, Funk 4, Barnes 2 and Morgan Cashion 1.

The Lady Falcons (4-6) will travel to the Chester Midwinter Classic beginning on January 2.
