(Cobden, Ill.) - New Athens put up 18 points in the first quarter and dominated from there, eliminating the Lady Falcons in the Class 1A girls basketball Regional championship on Thursday night in Cobden, 49-30.
The Lady Jackets forced EHS into 8 first quarter turnovers and outscored them 19-8 in the period, including a pair of three-pointers from Alayna Toedte. The Lady Falcons tried to keep pace in the second quarter, but entered the break down ten at 27-17.
Elverado's leading scorer on the season, Allie Whittington, was held without a point in the first half. She picked up 8 after the break, but it wouldn't be enough to keep the Falcons in the ball game. EHS managed just five points in the third period as New Athens continued to pull away for a 36-22 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Lady Jackets senior Danika White was good on 5-of-7 free throws and added three field goals, capping off a 20-point night for New Athens.
Tori Ehlers had 9 points - all in the first half - to lead Elverado. Whittington and Savannah Valerius each added 8 points, Hannah Alstat had 4 and Emma Funk finished with 1.
Elverado finishes the season at 16-8 overall, 6-1 in the SEC with a share of the conference title. New Athens moves on to the Goreville Sectional where they will meet Gallatin County in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, Meridian will take on either Webber Township or Woodlawn.
