Lady Falcons bring home the championship trophy from Z-R Tournament

(Zeigler, Ill.) - The Lady Falcons completed a sweep of the Zeiger-Royalton Round Robin Tournament on Saturday to bring home the championship trophy, defeating Cobden 49-45 to complete the week. Two Elverado players were also named to the All-Tournament Team - Allie Whittington and Hannah Alstat.
Elverado trailed 12-10 after one quarter against Cobden, but outscored the Appleknockers 12-7 in the second quarter to take a 22-19 lead into the half. Emma Funk scored 6 of her 7 total points during the second period for EHS.
The second half of the game belonged to Whittington. After scoring 9 points in the first two periods of play, Whittington erupted for 25 points in the final 16 minutes to finish with a game-high 34, including 5 three-pointers and an 11-for-14 performance at the free throw line.
Elverado outscored Cobden 14-8 in the third to go up 36-27, then had to hit their free throws down the stretch to hang on. Whittington was particularly clutch in the final quarter, going 5-for-7 at the line.
Also scoring for the Lady Falcons in the tournament finale were Tori Ehlers (7 points) and Alstat (1).

The tournament began for Elverado on January 17 with a 40-30 victory over Johnston City where Whittington again came up big in the second half.
Trailing 20-16 at the break, EHS outscored the Lady Indians 8-4 in the third to draw even before owning the fourth quarter. Whittington scored 17 of her team-high 28 points after the half, and made 6-of-7 free throws in the third and fourth quarters.
Alstat (4 points), Ehlers (3), Savannah Valerius (3) and Brianna Tuthill (2) also scored for Elverado in the win over Johnston City.
On Friday, the Lady Falcons crushed the tournament host Zeigler-Royalton 34-13 and rested several starters in the fourth quarter to keep them fresh for two games on Saturday. Whittington (14 points), Tuthill (6), Funk (4), Alstat (4), Abby Jeschke (3), Ehlers (2) and Cheradon Lively (1) all got in the scoring column against Z-R.
In Saturday's morning session, EHS set themselves up for a championship matchup later in the day by defeating Webber Township 43-35 after building a 25-19 lead heading into halftime. Whittingon had 3 three-pointers in the first half and finished with 16 points.
Alstat also finished in double figures for Elverado, scoring 10 points. Ehlers had 8, Tuthill 4, Funk 3 and Valerius 2.
The Lady Falcons have now won five straight games heading into Thursday's "Black Out Hunger" night game against Steeleville.
