(Elverado, Ill.) - Elverado’s boys got off to a slow start, but recovered with a huge second quarter run on their way to defeating conference foe Dongola 63-45 on Tuesday night in Elkville.
The Falcons trailed 19-12 moments into the second quarter, but then went on a 14-0 run to take the lead and run with it. By halftime, it was 37-24 Elverado, and Aquntez Penn, who was held scoreless in the first quarter, scored 12 of his team-high 23 points in the second.
“It was good to start conference play with a win,” said Falcons head coach Jacob Emling. “We used a big surge in the second quarter defensively to generate some offense and give us a lead. After that we really didn’t look back. It’s that type of intensity defensively that we have to have all the time. That can help us be a better scoring team. We still want to continue to improve, we know the schedule ahead gets tough, and we want to be ready to play up to the competition. So far, the boys are buying in well, and are continuing to improve.”
Isaac Floyd (17 points) and Sam Alstat (10 points) were also in double figures for EHS, and Dawson White was close behind them with 8. Blaine Morse and Trey Bernardini each scored 2 points, and Tanner Shread had 1.
Elverado (7-1) travels to Egyptian on Friday night.
