(Elkville, Ill.) - After a loss to Trico on January 22, the Falcons finished off the month on a three-game winning streak, thanks in part to a forfeit they received against Cairo, which used an ineligible player in their matchup at the Pinckneyville Shootout on January 26.
Elverado trailed 32-21 at the break against Trico, but stepped up their defense and crawled to within four at 39-35 at the end of the third period. The Pioneers were able to hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold on, though, taking the victory 52-47.
Aquntez Penn had 21 points for EHS before fouling out, Sam Alstat was also in double figures with 16 points, Isaac Floyd added 6 points, Dawson White 4.
Two nights later, the Falcons bounced back by thrashing Shawnee 72-39 behind a 20-point performance by Floyd. White added 19 points, scoring 15 of those in the first half. Penn finished with 16 points, Alstat 8, Blaine Morse and Tanner Shread each had 3, Brody Troutt 2 and Reed Funk 1.
On the court, Cairo outscored EHS 62-43 at Pinckneyville, but the Falcons were later awarded the win after it was discovered that an ineligible player was used by the Pilots.
Elverado won their third straight game on January 30, knocking off Zeigler-Royalton at their place, 61-50. In that contest, four Falcons were in double figures in the scoring column - Penn (25), Alstat (12), White (10) and Trey Bernardini (12).
