(Elkville, Ill.) - The Falcons got 33 points from Aquntez Penn and 22 from Sam Alstat as they used a strong first half to get in front of Century in their 76-67 victory on Friday night in Elkville.
The three-point shot was big for Elverado, as they hit a dozen threes in the game, six of them in the opening quarter, four of those by Alstat.
“Offensively tonight, things kind of speak for themselves," said EHS head coach Jacob Emling. "Sam got us going early on and continued shooting the ball well the whole game. He has gained so much more confidence the past few weeks, and it’s making him even more dangerous offensively."
"Aquntez attacked the rim well all night, and Dawson and Sam were ready to take shots when the defense collapsed on him. Defensively we have to do a better job, we got beat on some of the same stuff too many times in a row. I’ll take the blame for that, we should have been able to adjust quicker.”
Even with all the deep balls, the Falcons led by just two with 3:17 to go in the first half until a three-point play by Penn sparked an 8-0 run. Elverado took a 43-35 lead into the break, then held the lead throughout the second half.
Dawson White just missed joining Penn and Alstat in double figures, finishing with 9 points. Avery Caraker and Isaac Floyd each had 5 points, and Trey Bernardini had 2.
Elverado (17-10, 5-2) will host Gateway Legacy Christian Academy on Tuesday with a special 4:30 p.m. junior varsity tipoff. After the J-V game, the Falcons will hold their Senior Night recognition.
