(Elkville, Ill.) - The Falcons honored junior Aquntez Penn for reaching the 1,000 point mark in his career and then celebrated the feat with a 56-31 win over Shawnee on Friday night at EHS.
Penn reached the milestone back on December 29 against Jerseyville at the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic in Pinckneyville. A banner was hung on the wall to honor the achievement, and Penn received a commemorative photo basketball prior to tip-off of the varsity contest.
"I’m so happy for Aquntez, he is a special player," said Elverado head coach Jacob Emling. "The 1,000-point club is a great milestone, and he deserves it. He is a great kid, and a great teammate.”
Penn added to his already-impressive career numbers on Friday night with 28 points to lead the Falcons, but it was Dawson White who really burned Shawnee in the opening half.
White hit two threes in the opening quarter to help Elverado to an 11-3 lead through eight minutes, then added two more along with a pair of free throws in the second quarter to give him 14 points on the night.

Penn was doing his part in the first half as well, hitting a three and completing a three-point play as Elverado continued to build on their lead. At the break, the Falcons led 32-15, and they were never threatened in the second half.
"We played well tonight, especially defensively," Emling said. "I think the kids executed our game plan perfectly. We were able to attack their zone and force them into trying a triangle and two, and then a man. We are playing well overall right now and are going to try and keep it rolling Monday. The effort has been fantastic in practice and games. I’m proud of the boys and their effort, they continue to get better each day."
The Falcons (14-9, 4-1) travel back to Egyptian on Monday for the conclusion of their twice-delayed Mid-Winter Tournament.
Michael Shearer (5 points), Isaac Floyd (4), Blaine Morse (2), Kobe Manson (2) and Trey Bernardini (1) also scored for Elverado against Shawnee.
Friday's game was also a "Black Out Hunger" Night at EHS, and over $700 was raised for the Gum Drops program to provide child-friendly food to help enhance the quality of life for at-risk children throughout Southern Illinois.
