(Marion, Ill.) - Aquntez Penn and Dawson White combined for 46 points and Elverado held onto a big early lead to beat Agape Christian on the road, 68-56, on Tuesday night in Marion.
The victory was number 10 for the Falcons on the season, giving EHS back-to-back season of double-digit wins for the first time since 2005.
Already up 16-11 after the first quarter, Elverado poured it on in the second quarter with 29 points to take a 45-23 lead into the half. Penn had 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second period, but would later suffer an ankle injury, forcing him to miss the fourth quarter.
His absence was felt, as Agape fought their way back into the game, but White scored seven points in the final period to help the Falcons hang on. White finished with 21 points, including four three-pointers.
“We jumped out to an early first half lead by moving the ball well and attacking the rim on offense," said EHS head coach Jacob Emling. "We got into some injury and foul trouble in the second half and struggled offensively at times. Defensively we have to protect the paint better off the dribble, and rotate and close out better on the perimeter. Ultimately, it’s always nice to get a win, and that’s what we were able to do on the road tonight. We will continue to work in practice this week.”
Isaac Floyd (7 points), Sam Alstat (6), Trey Bernardini (4), Avery Caraker (2), Michael Shearer (2) and Tanner Shread (1) also scored for the Falcons against Agape Christian.
The Falcons (10-8, 3-1) travel to Egyptian beginning on Tuesday for the Egyptian Mid-Winter Tournament. Elverado meets Johnston City at 6:30 p.m. in their first matchup at the event.
