(Wolf Lake, Ill.) - The Falcons suffered a tough defeat at Shawnee on March 22, losing 7-6 on a walk-off two-run single by Caleb Nicholson in the bottom of the seventh inning.
After the Redskins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Elverado tied things up in the top of the second when Reed Funk doubled and later scored on a passed ball. Down 2-1 entering the fifth, the Falcons got a two-run homer from Tanner Shread to regain the lead, 3-2.
Hunter McRoy made it 4-2 with an RBI double an inning later, but Shawnee kept fighting, knotting the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on three hits.
Elverado regained the lead once more in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by Blaine Morse, but the Redskins struck last, getting three hits and a walk in the bottom of the seventh to steal the victory.
“I couldn’t be more proud of how the boys fought through this one,” said EHS head coach Reid Cure. “Blaine gutted out a great six innings and helped himself out at the plate which is exactly what I need from a senior. Tanner’s long ball really gave us an awesome swing of momentum, but Shawnee battled right there with us all game. This team is so close to pumping out all cylinders, we just have to find what it’s going to take to get us there.”
Morse (3-4, 2 RBI, 2 2B), T. Shread (3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR, 2B), Funk (2-3, 2 R, 2B), McRoy (1-4, RBI, 2B), Chase Buser (1-4, R), Trey Bernardini (1-2) and Jessie Shread (1-4) had hits for the Falcons. Morse, the EHS starting pitcher, took a no-decision on the mound, tossing five and two-thirds innings and allowing four runs on five hits and four walks with nine strikeouts. Funk (1/3 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 2 BB) took the loss in relief.
