(McLeansboro, Ill.) - Du Quoin Middle Schools' girls basketball team will play for a Regional championship this Saturday - or Monday, if weather postpones the game - after defeating Mt. Vernon 50-29 in McLeansboro on Wednesday evening.
DMS held Mt. Vernon to just 11 first half points and headed into the break up 23-11. After the break, Ayanna Dunklin scored 13 of her game-high 21 points, and the Lady Warriors used an 18-7 third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Lauren Heape added 9 points for Du Quoin, Loveleen Dunklin 7, Abbi Mocaby 5, Emma Fischer and Maddie Stevenson each had 4, and Malayna Russell 1.
The Lady Warriors will take on Regional host Hamilton County in Saturday's championship at 1:00 p.m. for the right to go on to the SIJHSAA Class L State Final Tournament.
DMS wrapped up a share of the conference title earlier in the week with Monday's 50-37 home win over Sparta on 8th Grade Night. The Lady Warriors outscored Sparta 20-1 in the second quarter to get a double digit lead they never let go of.
Heape led the scoring with 12 points, Fischer and Mocaby each had 8, L. Dunklin, A. Dunklin and Stevenson all finished with 6, and Lexi Cobin had 4.
