(Du Quoin, Ill.) - Du Quoin entered the fourth quarter with a six-point lead, but was unable to hang onto it, scoring just four points in the final quarter against a talented Carbondale team that took home a 46-40 victory over the Warriors on Eighth Grade Night at DMS.
"Proud of our boys," said DMS head coach Jason James. "It was 8th grade night and all of our boys played great. I couldn't be more proud of a team than I am tonight. We play hard every night and that is why these kids will do great things in high school."
The Warriors put together a stellar first half offensively, getting contributions from seven different players and taking a 27-21 lead into the break. But Carbondale came to life after the half, playing DMS evenly in the third before outscoring them 16-4 in the fourth. Du Quoin missed some opportunities at the free throw line down the stretch, going 2-for-8 at the charity stripe in the fourth period.
Jaden Smith and Slayde Huntley each scored 8 points to lead the Warriors, Trajion Smith added 7, Xavier Baxter 6, Hayden Sizemore and Maurice Washington each scored 4, and Caden Hutchens had 3.
In other recent action, DMS fell 60-53 at home against Murphysboro on January 11. T. Smith led the scoring with 16 points, one better than Huntley's 15. J. Smith had 10 points, Hutchens 8, Hunter Douglas and David Lee each had 2. The Warriors played without Baxter and Korban Cranford who were out with illnesses.
On January 17, the Warriors dropped a game at Nashville, 38-32. Hutchens had 10 points to lead Du Quoin in scoring, followed by Baxter (8), J. Smith (7), Huntley (5) and T. Smith (2).
The Warriors have one regular season game remaining, Thursday's road contest at West Frankfort. They'll host their SIJHSAA Class L Regional beginning on Wednesday, January 31 with a 5:30 game against Benton.
