(Du Quoin & Johnston City, Ill.) - The Lady Indians got big RBI's from Morgan Bullar, Grace Haney, Katie Smith and Chloe Hill in their 5-1 home win over Carterville on Monday, April 2. Hill was also spectacular in the pitching circle, allowing one earned run on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
"Chloe Hill pitched awesome, defense was outstanding behind he,r and we had several big hits with runners in scoring position," said DHS head coach Jason James. "Big win for us, first win against (Carterville) in five years."
Smith doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first to make it 1-0 Du Quoin, then Bullar led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo homer to put the Lady Indians up a pair.
Smith doubled with one out in the fourth to drive in Avery Waller (BB), then scored on Grace Haney's RBI single moments later to give Du Quoin a 4-0 lead. Hill drove in the fifth run in the bottom of the sixth with a base hit to bring in Smith, who had walked.
A leadoff walk and a triple in the seventh for Carterville prevented Hill from getting the shutout.
Smith (2-3, 3 R, RBI, 2B, 3B, BB), Bullar (2-3, R, HR, BB), Haney (2-4, RBI) and Hill (1-4, RBI) had the hits for the Lady Indians.
Du Quoin improved to 8-2 two days later at Johnston City, winning 16-6 in six innings. DHS jumped ahead 4-0 in the top of the first and added to their lead with five more in the second to take charge up 9-1.
Six more runs came in the top of the sixth where Katie Smith drilled a homer to put an exclamation point on a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Waller, and Olivia Whitley also added RBIs, Bullar, Haney, Avery Shively and Maci McKinnies each had two hits.
