(Du Quoin, Ill.) - The Lady Indians broke an eight-game losing streak and hit 11 three-pointers in beating Sparta 59-34 in Du Quoin on Thursday night. Five DHS players scored at least 8 points in the victory.
"We needed to work on some things," said Du Quoin head coach Shawn File. "We have to change our direction depending on who we're guarding and who we're playing. Tonight was a game we felt like we could get up into them a little bit, press a little bit. I thought we started off strong, I was proud of the way we ran the floor tonight. At halftime I thought we were maybe a little more tired than usual, because we pushed a little more tonight. Different games, different opponents are going to let you do different things."
A 21-7 first quarter set the tone for DHS with Meryn Gross and Bailey Harsy both connecting on three-pointers. By halftime, Du Quoin had stretched the lead to 20, and from there it was academic.
Grace Haney scored all of her 11 points in the first half and led the Lady Indians in that department. Elizabeth Bird had 10 points, Gross and Chloe Hill both had 9 (all on three-pointers), Harsy had 8, Maya Russell, Katie Smith and Bobbiann Hamlin each had 3, Morgan Bullar 2, and Maddie Robison 1.
Du Quoin (8-12) is at home on Tuesday against Anna-Jonesboro for Senior Night, where Haney - the lone senior - will be recognized prior to the game.
