(Du Quoin, Ill.) - Du Quoin won for the fourth time in their previous five games on Friday night, taking care of business against Sparta 60-42 at Anders Gymnasium at DHS. Lamontay Daughtery posted a game-high 23 points, 14 of them coming during the opening quarter of action.
Josh Heape added a pair of three-pointers in that first period, where the Indians were able to post 24 points. The lead continued to swell up in the second, and by halftime Du Quoin had the game well in hand up 39-20.
"Our first half was really good," said DHS head coach Justin Barrington. "We were able to jump out to a 19-point lead by the half and that's what you want to do at home. We caused some defensive turnovers. Offensively we got the ball where we wanted it to be tonight. We were very unselfish in the first half. We took away some good looks for great looks. I thought tonight was more of an effort in terms of the way we defended as well as the way we were active offensively, we dictated the pace."
With a 56-31 advantage through three quarters, most of the Indians' regulars got considerable time off in the fourth quarter.
Heape finished with 9 points, Braeden Pursell had 7, Shamar Adams and Will Woodside each had 6, Hank Stewart 4, Ashton Smith 3 and Carson Davis 2.
"Offensively I was really happy with where we were tonight," Barrington added. "Defensively I think we let up a couple of times, but I think part of that was the score. It was hard to stay dialed-down like in the first half."
The Indians (13-13, 4-4) learned earlier on Friday that they will be the No. 3 seed in their IHSA Sub-Sectional, and will travel to Johnston City for the postseason beginning on Wednesday, February 21, when they'll meet the winner of the February 19 matchup between Chester and Johnston City. Anna-Jonesboro, the No. 2 seed, will meet either West Frankfort or Vienna in the other semifinal on Tuesday, February 20.
