(Du Quoin, Ill.) - The Indians will play for a Regional championship on home turf this Saturday after shutting out Chester 7-0 Wednesday afternoon. Starting pitcher Bryzn Witcher tossed a complete-game gem, allowing five hits and no walks, finishing with six strikeouts.
Du Quoin's offense started the bottom of the first with a bang, as Klayton Donoghue, Alex Zimmerman, Tevin Lee and Ashton Smith all singled during a two-run inning. Charley Mercier added an RBI on a fielder's choice.
Will Woodside walked and scored on an error in the second to make it 3-0, then Hank Stewart and Ashton Smith had hits in the third for another Du Quoin run. Mercier put it out of reach in the fifth with a two-run homer to right field.
The closest the Jackets came to putting up a run against Witcher came in the top of the third after back to back hits, but DHS right fielder Ryan Myers fired to the cutoff man, Zimmerman, who gunned out Nick Meyer at the plate with a well-placed tag by Smith to keep Chester scoreless.
Donoghue (1-4, 2 R), Zimmerman (2-4, R), Lee (1-3, RBI, BB), Stewart (1-4, R), Smith (2-2, R, 2B, BB, HBP), Mercier (1-4, R, 4 RBI, HR) and Witcher (1-3) had the hits for the Indians (17-11), who advance to take on either Benton or Waltonville-Sesser-Valier in the 10:00 a.m. championship game on Saturday at the Ballpark at DHS.
