(Du Quoin, Ill.) - Following a lackluster performance in a 9-0 drubbing at the hands of the Goreville Blackcats on Monday, Du Quoin got back on track on Wednesday at West Frankfort with a 21-12 - yes, 21-12 - victory over the Redbirds in an offensive clinic.
Every spot in the lineup had a hit for the Indians in the win at Frankfort. Tevin Lee had perhaps the most impressive stat line, smacking a pair of doubles and a three-run homer in a 3-for-4 day at the plate that also included a walk, a sacrifice fly, 3 runs scored and 4 RBIs.
The Indians never trailed, pouncing on the Redbirds with four runs in the top of the first inning. Klayton Donoghue led off with a base hit, then Alex Zimmerman and Lee both walked, and with one out, Ashton Smith delivered an RBI single. Brian Winters (bases-loaded HBP) and Bryzn Witcher (sacrifice fly) would each add RBIs in the inning.
Lee, Hank Stewart and Smith would all have hits in a two-run second inning for DHS, then the lead ballooned to 10-0 midway through the third after RBIs by Zimmerman (sac fly), Lee (double) and Stewart (two-run single).
West Frankfort would try to chip away, but Du Quoin kept adding on, scoring in every inning but the fifth. Lee's three-run bomb in the seventh put it out of reach for good.
Donoghue (1-4, 3 R, BB, HBP), Zimmerman (1-3, 2 R, 4 RBI, BB, 2 SAC), Lee (3-4, 3 R, 4 RBI, HR, 2 2B, BB, SAC), Stewart (2-4, 3 R, BB, HBP), Smith (4-5, R, RBI, 2B), Winters (2-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, HBP), Witcher (2-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 2B, BB, SAC), Charley Mercier (2-5, R, BB) and Will Woodside (1-3, 3 R, BB, HBP) all hit safely for DHS.
The Indians managed just six hits at Goreville, two apiece from Lee (2-3) and Winters (2-3, 2B), and one from Zimmerman (1-3) and Mercier (1-3).
Du Quoin 10, Benton 8 (April 25, 2018):
The Indians almost let a 6-0 lead slip away at Benton the previous week, but got hits from Smith (single) and Mercier (RBI double) in the top of the ninth to score a 10-8 extra inning win against the Rangers. Smith also homered in the game and finished the day 3-4 with 3 runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
Zimmerman (2-4, 2 R, BB), Lee (2-4, R, 2B, BB), Stewart (1-4, R, RBI, BB), Mercier (1-4, RBI, HBP), Winters (1-5, R, RBI), Witcher (1-4) and Woodside (1-4) had Du Quoin's other hits.
Witcher was the winning pitcher, going 4 2/3 innings of relief and allowing two runs on four hits.
