Indians take care of Z-R-C, Carterville

(Du Quoin & Carterville, Ill.) - Du Quoin bounced back from Tuesday's loss to Nashville with convincing wins on Wednesday at home over Z-R-C, 9-0, and on Thursday at Carterville, 10-5.
Senior Hank Stewart was the big story against Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher, turning in a three-hit shutout on the mound for the Indians as well as hitting his third home run of the season as part of a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Klayton Donoghue also had a big day for Du Quoin, finishiing 3-for-4 with a triple.
At Carterville, the Indians jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Lions could get a runner past second base. Ashton Smith doubled to lead off the top of the second inning and later scored after Ryan Myers was hit by a pitch, Bryzn Witcher singled for an RBI, and Will Woodside reached on an error, helping DHS to a 2-0 lead.
The Indians got three more runs in the third. Tevin Lee was hit by a pitch with one out, and with two outs, Smith walked, Brian Winters and Myers were both hit by pitches, and then Witcher delivered a two-run single to make it 5-0.
Lee singled to drive in Donoghue (HBP) in the fourth for a 6-0 Du Quoin advantage, then Carterville tried to chip away with two runs on a walk and two hits in the top of the fifth, and another run on a hit, a walk and a sacrifice fly in the sixth, but the Indians put it away with four in the bottom of the sixth.
Donoghue started the rally with a single, Alex Zimmerman doubled for an RBI, Lee walked, Stewart drove in a run with a double, then Smith connected on a sac fly to complete the four-run inning, leaving Du Quoin in command, 10-3.
Witcher was the pitcher of record for the Indians, allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out eight in six innings of work. Winters pitched out of some trouble in the seventh to close it out.
Hitting for Du Quoin against the Lions were Donoghue (1-3, 2 R, BB, HBP), Zimmerman (1-4, R, RBI, 2B), Lee (1-2, 2 R, RBI, BB, HBP), Stewart (1-3, R, RBI, 2B, HBP), Smith (1-2, 2 R, RBI, 2B, SAC, BB) and Witcher (2-4, 3 RBI).
The Indians are at Pinckneyville on Monday, April 16 in another SIRR Mississippi Division contest. Those same two teams will meet again in a make-up game on April 24 in Du Quoin.
