(Du Quoin, Ill.) - The Indians split Saturday's two games at the Pepsi Classic in Du Quoin, falling 4-3 in a battle with Carbondale before doubling up Flora 10-5 in the rain shortened finale.
DHS starter Bryzn Witcher allowed three runs on five hits through the first three innings, but then retired eleven batters in a row before issuing a walk in the seventh inning. In the third, the Indians' offense gave him some help when Alex Zimmerman walked in front of a two-run homer by Tevin Lee, cutting Du Quoin's deficit to 3-2.
The Indians tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. Zimmerman and Lee were both hit by a pitch to start the inning, then advanced on an infield single by Hank Stewart. After a forceout at home, Will Woodside grounded back to the pitcher who made the play at first, allowing Zimmerman to race home with the tying run, and giving Woodside an RBI.
The walk issued by Witcher with one out in the top of the seventh inning ended his day, and Owen Bradley came on in relief. He got a force-out at second on the next batter, but after a passed ball, the Terriers brought in the eventual winning run on a base hit.
Lee (1-3, R, 2 RBI, HR, HBP), Stewart (1-3, BB) and Klayton Donoghue (1-4) had hits for the Indians. Witcher finished with six and a third innings pitched, three earned runs allowed on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Every Indian in the lineup reached base at least once against Flora, and the Tribe held on for a 10-5 win through five innings when the game was called.
Zimmerman got the start and worked the first three innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and a hit batter, striking out one. Owen Bradley worked the fourth and fifth, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Lee (3-3, 3 R, RBI, 2B, HBP), Bradley (1-3, R, 2 RBI, 2B, BB), Woodside (1-2, R, BB) and Nick Depyatic (1-3, R, RBI, HBP) had Du Quoin's hits against Flora.
