(Ina, Ill.) - The Tigers had a shot to tie or win it in the closing seconds of Saturday's SIJHSAA State Tournament matchup with Altamont Lutheran, but couldn't get a clean look and were sent home with a 40-36 loss at Rend Lake College.
Pinckneyville #204 led by four heading into the final period, but three straight turnovers to start the quarter allowed Altamont to tie it up at 30-30 with less than a minute gone by. With 4:14 to go, Vaden Szczepanski scored in the paint to give the Tigers a one point lead at 33-32, but a minute and a half later Szczepanski - #204's leading scorer - was whistled for his fifth personal foul on a charge.
Altamont took the lead on free throws just before Szczepanski fouled out, then extended their lead to three on a jumper with 1:30 to play. A free throw by Moll, and two by Landon Millikin tied the game for the TIgers with under a minute to go, but a stick-back at the other end put Altamont back up by two.
#204 had the ball coming out of a timeout with 13.5 seconds to play with a chance to tie or win it, but Moll was forced into a contested three-pointer that was off, and Millikin wasn't able to get a shot off after securing the offensive rebound as he was swarmed by defenders.
Szczepanski led the Tigers with 18 points, 16 of which came in the first three periods. Moll added 7 points, Dawson Wynn had 4, Millikin 3, and Issac Teel and Dylan Schuetz each had 2.
Pinckneyville District #204, coached by Josh Plumlee, Jerry Travelstead and Grayson Buza, finishes their season with an overall record of 21-7 and a Regional championship.
